Barnstaple Ghost Walk

About this event

Barnstaple Ghost Walk Discover the hidden history of Barnstaple on an evening ghost walk exploring the town's medieval roots, river trade, justice system, folklore and enduring tales of the unexplained. As one of North Devon's oldest towns, Barnstaple's historic streets, ancient crossings and shadowed corners provide a powerful setting for stories shaped by centuries of trade, conflict, belief and superstition. Guided by an Extours host, you'll uncover researched accounts of unusual events, lingering legends and reported encounters linked to some of Barnstaple's most historic locations — from medieval chapels and guild buildings to riverside routes once busy with commerce and punishment. Guests may choose to take part in optional paranormal investigation using EMF meters, dowsing rods and other recognised tools, or simply enjoy the storytelling and atmosphere as the walk unfolds. We avoid jump scares and gimmicks. Our focus is on intrigue rather than fear — examining the unanswered questions, unexplained experiences and darker episodes woven into Barnstaple's long history. Age Guidance Early walks are family-friendly and open to under-16s (recommended age 8+). Later evening walks are 16+ to provide a more mature experience. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on all walks. Weather Walks operate in most weather conditions. If severe weather makes the event unsafe, the walk will be postponed and an alternative date offered. Thoughtful, atmospheric and firmly rooted in local history, the Barnstaple Ghost Walk offers a compelling way to explore the town's past — and the mysteries that may still linger after dark.
