About this event

⚓ Weymouth Ghost Walk – Description Weymouth has always been a place of arrival and departure — a harbour shaped by war, trade, imprisonment and the relentless pull of the sea. Long before it became a seaside resort, Weymouth was a working port where soldiers embarked for foreign wars, prisoners were transported overseas, disease arrived by ship, and bodies were sometimes carried out just as quietly as cargo. For centuries, this stretch of harbour watched desperate scenes unfold: press-ganged sailors dragged away from taverns, smugglers unloading contraband under cover of darkness, prisoners held in makeshift cells, and families waiting on the quayside — not knowing whether they would see their loved ones return. On this guided evening walk, we explore Weymouth's historic harbour and old town, uncovering the darker stories that shaped the place long before deckchairs and tourism arrived. From former customs buildings and narrow lanes to quayside taverns and forgotten corners, we trace tales of crime, punishment, loss, and the restless spirits said to linger where land meets water. You'll hear stories of: Smuggling, privateering and illicit trade War, imprisonment and transportation Sailors, soldiers and civilians claimed by the sea Ghost stories rooted in real places and recorded history This is an atmospheric walk blending maritime history with ghostly folklore, revealing a shadowed side of Weymouth that daylight rarely shows — where footsteps echo along the harbour and the past never seems entirely at rest. Age Guidance: Under 16s are welcome on the earlier of the two scheduled walks (recommended age 8+). The later walk is reserved for ages 16 and over due to darker themes and content.
