Adelphi Hotel

The Adelphi Hotel stands at Ranelagh Place in the centre of Liverpool. The first hotel on the site opened in 1826, when hotelier James Radley converted two eighteenth-century town houses on the former grounds of Ranelagh Gardens. That building was replaced in 1876 and again between 1911 and 1914, when the present hotel was constructed to a design by architect Frank Atkinson. The Adelphi served as a principal stopping point for transatlantic passengers travelling through Liverpool's docks in the early twentieth century. The building is recorded on the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II listed building, a designation made in March 1975.
