Bodmin Jail stands on Berrycombe Road in Bodmin, Cornwall. An earlier county gaol, designed by the magistrate Sir John Call, was built between 1778 and 1780; the present buildings date substantially from a rebuilding begun around 1855, on an extended site. A further storey and four bays were added to the main cell block in 1901, and part of the complex was later used as a naval prison. Bodmin Gaol, including its boundary walls, is a Grade II listed building, first listed in 1969. Many nineteenth-century fittings survive in situ, including original cell shelving and gas-light fixtures.
