Newarke Houses Museum in Leicester occupies Skeffington House, a Grade II* listed building dating from around 1600 with its front altered and side wings added in the nineteenth century. Its principal staircase is said to have been built for William Wright, who purchased the house in 1730. The building stands within the historic Newarke precinct, close to the medieval Magazine Gateway. The museum first opened in a smaller form on 23 July 1940 and reopened in its expanded state on 26 May 1953 following four years of extensive repair. It now houses collections relating to Leicester's social history and the Royal Leicestershire Regiment.
