The Mermaid Inn

The Mermaid Inn occupies a late 15th-century timber-framed building on Mermaid Street in the ancient Cinque Port town of Rye, East Sussex. A stone-vaulted cellar beneath the building dates from the 13th century. The south front, with its jettied upper floor and studded timber framing, is the earliest surviving portion above ground. The building was first designated a Grade II* listed building in October 1951, a status reflecting its exceptional architectural and historic interest. It continues to operate as an inn and hotel within the town's medieval street pattern.
