Closeburn Castle, near Thornhill in Dumfries and Galloway, is a rectangular-plan tower house probably built in the late 14th century for the Kirkpatrick family. After the family's nearby mansion house burned down in 1748, they returned to live in the older tower, which was then adapted as a residence. The castle underwent substantial alteration in the 18th and 19th centuries, including a crenellated parapet and a castellated porch added after 1856. It is a Category B listed building, first designated in August 1971, and retains historic features such as an iron yett at its original entrance.
