Maybole Castle

Maybole Castle stands on the High Street in Maybole, South Ayrshire. Probably dating from the first quarter of the seventeenth century, it is an L-plan, four-storey tower built as the town mansion of the Earls of Cassillis, hereditary bailiffs of Carrick. Two-storey crow-stepped, gabled extensions were added to the south and west sides prior to 1856. The castle is a Category A listed building, a designation given in April 1971 in recognition of its architectural and historical significance. It has more recently been included on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland, with restoration works undertaken in the early twenty-first century.
