Crumlin Road Gaol in north Belfast was constructed between 1840 and 1859 to designs by the architect Charles Lanyon. The complex, including the Governor's House, central building, wings and boundary walls, is a listed building, first listed on 4 March 1988. It served as a working prison until its closure on 31 March 1996. Built on a radial plan, the gaol was one of the more advanced prison designs of its period and today forms part of Belfast's wider stock of protected Victorian civic architecture.
