The building known today as the Hanbury Arms, on the riverbank at Caerleon near Pontypool, has a main range dating from the sixteenth century, probably around 1565, with a rear wing rebuilt in the early eighteenth century. It was constructed originally as a house, Ty Glyndwr, for the Morgan family, and became an inn on Caerleon Quay during the seventeenth century, when one room was also used as a magistrate's court. The poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson stayed at the inn in 1856, while writing part of his Idylls of the King. The building is listed at Grade II by Cadw in recognition of its long architectural and documentary history.
