Ormesby Hall, on the edge of Middlesbrough, is a Grade I listed country house that was home to the Pennyman family for nearly four centuries following their acquisition of the estate around 1599. The present house dates mainly from the 1740s, when it was built for the 3rd Baronet, Sir James Pennyman, and his wife Dorothy, incorporating elements of an earlier building. Later in the eighteenth century the 6th Baronet enlarged the house, added a stable block and laid out the surrounding parkland. The two resulting sections of the building were joined together around 1870, giving Ormesby Hall the form it retains today as a substantial country estate on the outskirts of the town.
