Chillingham Castle

Chillingham Castle in Northumberland dates from the 14th century, with successive alterations made during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the later work involving architects John Paterson and Sir Jeffry Wyatville. It is built to a quadrilateral plan, with four corner towers enclosing a central courtyard. The castle was first listed as a Grade I building on 21 September 1951, recognising its special architectural and historic interest. Set within the Chillingham estate in rural Northumberland, the castle reflects a long sequence of medieval and later border fortification and domestic remodelling.
