Greenside Community Centre in Gateshead was built in 1925, to plans drawn up the previous year, as the Greenside Miners' Welfare Institute. It was designed by the architectural firm William Dixon & Sons, using brick, sandstone dressings and pebble dash beneath a Welsh slate roof, with a distinctive Venetian window to its main hall gable. Many original features, including sash windows, survive from its construction. Ownership of the building passed to the local community from the Durham Miners' Welfare organisation during the 1960s, and it has continued in use as a village meeting and activity space ever since.
