Clifton Hall in Nottingham dates from the late sixteenth century, with alterations made around 1632, probably by the architect John Smythson, and further internal work carried out in the later seventeenth century and between 1731 and 1762. The house was remodelled around 1779 by John Carr of York, with further alterations in the nineteenth century. It is a Grade I listed building, first listed in 1954. The house was converted from private ownership in 1953 and later served as university offices. Its surrounding grounds, an early to mid-seventeenth-century terraced garden above the River Trent, are separately registered as a Grade II historic park and garden.
