Wollaton Hall in Nottingham was built between 1580 and 1588 to designs by the architect Robert Smythson for Sir Francis Willoughby. The house was altered in the late seventeenth century and its interior was later remodelled by Sir Jeffry Wyatville in the early nineteenth century. Constructed in ashlar limestone with an almost freestanding tower at each corner, it is regarded as one of the most significant Elizabethan houses in England and is Grade I listed. The building was converted for use as a museum in 1925 and now serves as Nottingham's natural history museum, set within its historic deer park on the western edge of the city.
