Norwood Park near Southwell has documented origins reaching back to 1388, when the estate, then called Northwode, was recorded in the property inquisition of the Archbishop of York. The present country house was built around 1763-64 in the style of the architect John Carr of York, replacing an earlier 17th-century dwelling on the site. Constructed of brick with stone dressings and hipped slate roofs, the house and its west wing are Grade II* listed, a status first granted in August 1952. The estate today combines its Georgian mansion with surrounding parkland that has been developed over several centuries.
