Newstead Abbey, near Gedling in Nottinghamshire, began as an Augustinian priory established in the late 12th century. Following the Dissolution, the buildings were converted into a country house in 1539 by Sir John Byron of Colwick. The estate later passed to the poet Lord Byron, who sold it in 1818 to Thomas Wildman; the house was subsequently extended and restored for Wildman by the architect John Shaw in 1819. Newstead Abbey and its boundary walls are Grade I listed, a designation made in 1952. The building today combines surviving medieval monastic fabric with later Gothic Revival and Victorian additions.
