Queen Street Masonic Temple, also known as Phoenix Hall, was built in 1784-85 in Sunderland's East End by the architect and mason John Bonner. It was opened in 1785 by the Phoenix Lodge of Freemasons, which has occupied it continuously since. The building was extended over time, with a banqueting range converted from an attached building between 1890 and 1894 and a rear entrance hall range added in 1923. The temple is Grade I listed, a designation first made in 1975 and last amended in 2019, reflecting its status as one of Sunderland's oldest surviving buildings.
