The Steelhouse Lane Lockup in central Birmingham opened in 1891 as the city's main custody block, built alongside the Victoria Law Courts to replace the earlier Moor Street Public Office. A tunnel beneath Coleridge Passage allowed prisoners to be taken directly to court. Originally comprising around seventy cells across three floors, the building operated as a working lock-up until 2016. The cells block is Grade II listed, having first been designated in July 1982 for its Victorian brick and terracotta facade. It now houses the West Midlands Police Museum, telling the story of policing and custody in the city.
