Tamworth Castle stands on a motte first raised in the late 11th century, with its distinctive stone shell keep rebuilt during the 12th and early 13th centuries. Successive owners added an early 15th-century hall range, a 16th-century warder's lodge and an early 17th-century south wing, with further alterations made around 1800. This long sequence of building work has left the castle as a composite structure of stone rubble and ashlar surrounding an early keep. It is a Grade I listed building, first designated in 1950 and amended in 1992, and the castle now operates as a museum open to the public.
