The Royal Hotel occupies a prominent position on Whitby's West Cliff, built between 1847 and 1848 to a design by the architect George Townsend Andrews for the railway promoter George Hudson. Ownership passed to the North Eastern Railway Company before it was sold in 1863, and in 1873 Sir George Elliot MP acquired the hotel, subsequently adding a theatre, saloon and pleasure grounds. The building's East Terrace elevation features eleven bays of sash windows beneath heavy cornices, with mansard and hipped roofs across its two long ranges. It has been a Grade II listed building since 1965, recognised as a substantial mid-nineteenth-century seaside hotel associated with the development of Whitby as a resort.
