Allerton Castle

Yorkshire

No dates are listed at Allerton Castle right now.

Allerton Castle, near Knaresborough in North Yorkshire, is a large Gothic Revival mansion rebuilt between 1848 and 1851 to a Neo-Jacobean design by the London architect George Martin, for the 18th Lord Stourton. The house replaced an earlier building on the same site and is recognised nationally through its Grade I listing. The Stourton family, later Lords Mowbray, held the estate from 1805 until 1983. During the Second World War the property was used by the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving as headquarters for RAF Bomber Command's No. 6 Group. Allerton Castle remains one of the more substantial nineteenth-century country houses in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, combining Victorian Gothic architecture with a long and well-documented ownership history.
