The Milner Hotel York occupies a building constructed between 1878 and 1896 as the Royal Station Hotel, designed by Thomas Prosser and William Peachey for the North Eastern Railway Company as the flagship hotel of the new York railway station. Built in yellow Scarborough brick with ashlar dressings in an Italianate style, it stands directly adjacent to the station it was designed to serve. The building is a Grade II listed structure, first designated in 1983, reflecting its architectural quality and its place in the wider railway-age development of York's station quarter. It continues in use today as a hotel.
