The Ropery at Chatham Historic Dockyard was built between 1785 and 1791, with an engine house added around 1836, and is a Grade I listed building. Rope has been made continuously on this site since 1618, and the building retains rope-making machinery dating from the nineteenth century, making it the last working ropery in the Royal Navy. It is additionally protected as a Scheduled Monument. At around a quarter of a mile in length, the Ropery remains one of the longest buildings in the country and a rare survival of integrated eighteenth-century industrial manufacturing.
