Coalhouse Fort

Coalhouse Fort at East Tilbury occupies a site of successive Thames defences, beginning with a blockhouse ordered by Henry VIII in 1539-40. The present casemated fort was built in the Victorian period, following an 1860 Royal Commission report into coastal defence. Its battery and artillery defences are a Scheduled Monument, first scheduled on 9 August 1962. The fort is also included on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register, with its condition assessed as very bad, though repair works have been carried out with Historic England grant support in recent years.
