Fort Amherst

Fort Amherst in Chatham was constructed from 1755, following plans developed from 1708, with building work continuing until around 1803. It formed a key part of the defences protecting Chatham Dockyard and the River Medway until it was declared obsolete by an 1860 Royal Commission. The fort forms part of the Brompton Lines, a Scheduled Monument covering Chatham's eighteenth and nineteenth-century land defences, comprising gun positions, magazines, barracks and tunnels arranged to command the surrounding valley.
