Colchester Castle stands on the site of the Roman Temple of Claudius, the centre of the imperial cult in Britain and a target of the Boudiccan revolt of AD 60 to 61. The Norman keep was built for William I from around 1076, reusing the temple's podium as its foundation, and is the largest Norman keep to survive in England, larger even than the White Tower of London. The multi-period site, encompassing Roman, Anglo-Saxon and medieval remains, is a scheduled monument. The surrounding grounds, Castle Park, are separately registered as a Grade II park and garden, first listed in 1987.
