Colchester Town Hall on the High Street was built between 1897 and 1902 to designs by architect John Belcher in the Edwardian Baroque style, replacing an earlier nineteenth-century building on the same site. The site's civic function dates back further still: an earlier moot hall stood there from 1277 until its demolition in 1843. The present building is a Grade I listed structure, first listed in 1968, reflecting its architectural quality in red brick and Portland stone. It remains the seat of Colchester's local council and a prominent civic landmark in the town centre.
