Landguard Fort

Landguard Fort stands on a shingle spit at the mouth of Harwich Harbour near Felixstowe, on a site fortified in various forms since the sixteenth century. The present fort was largely rebuilt between 1744 and 1749 as a regular brick pentagon with angled bastions, and was extensively remodelled in the 1870s to reflect advances in artillery. During the Second World War it served as the Fire Command Headquarters for the defences of Harwich Haven, remaining in military use until the Army withdrew in 1956. Landguard Fort and its associated field works, which include batteries and fortifications of varying dates up to the Second World War, are designated a Scheduled Monument.
