The former HM Prison Dorchester stands in North Square, on the site of the town's medieval castle. Dorset Council's historic environment record states that the prison was built to plans by William Blackburn between 1789 and 1794, and rebuilt between 1878 and 1885 on the Pentonville model, leaving Blackburn's gatehouse as the surviving element of the earlier prison. Historic England lists that stone gateway at Grade II.
