Ghost Hunts at Nothe Fort

Nothe Fort was built at the end of Weymouth's Nothe Peninsula between around 1860 and 1872, constructed by the Royal Engineers to defend Portland and Weymouth harbours during a period of concern over French naval strength. Built with Portland ashlar walls, casemates and deep magazines around a D-shaped plan, it originally mounted twelve muzzle-loading coastal defence guns. The fort and its outer gateway are Grade II* listed, a designation dating from June 1974, and the wider site, including its tramway and searchlight battery, is separately protected as a scheduled monument. The fort remained in military use into the twentieth century before its later conversion to a museum.
