Shire Hall in Dorchester was designed by the architect Thomas Hardwick and built between 1796 and 1797 on the site of an earlier hall dating to at least the 1630s. It served as Dorset's courthouse from 1797 until 1955, its best-known case being the 1834 trial of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, six agricultural labourers convicted for forming an early trade union. The building has been a Grade I listed structure since 1950, recognised as one of the best-preserved courthouses of its type. After ceasing to function as a court, it was used as council offices before opening in 2018 as a museum, retaining its original courtroom largely as it appeared at the time of the Tolpuddle trial.
