Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker, near Brentwood in Essex, is a three-level underground structure built in the early 1950s as a Sector Operations Centre under the RAF's Rotor radar modernisation programme. As the threat posed by faster jets and intercontinental missiles grew, the Home Office converted it by the early 1960s into a Regional Seat of Government, later termed a Regional Government Headquarters, designed to allow officials to administer the region in the aftermath of a nuclear strike. Decommissioned in the early 1990s, the bunker was sold back to the local farming family from whom the land had originally been requisitioned, and it has since opened to the public as a museum focused on its Cold War history.
