Peterborough Museum occupies a Grade II listed building on Priestgate, first listed in February 1952. Built in 1816 as a private house, it incorporates cellars surviving from an earlier sixteenth-century building on the same site. Following the death of its original owner, the house was bought by Earl Fitzwilliam and used as a public dispensary and infirmary, the city's first hospital, from 1857 until 1928. The building was later given over for use as Peterborough's museum, retaining the classical, Greek Revival-influenced Georgian exterior commissioned by its original builder.
