Shrewsbury Prison, known locally as the Dana, closed on 28 March 2013 under the Closure of Prisons Order 2013, which named HM Prison Shrewsbury among six prisons closed that day. Historic England lists the site at Grade II under the record name Former Her Majesty's Prison Shrewsbury. It stands immediately below Shrewsbury Castle, which is listed at Grade I and scheduled as an ancient monument in its own right.
