Stirling Old Town Jail on St John Street was designed by the prison architect Thomas Brown and built in 1847, replacing the town's earlier Tolbooth jail. Constructed of dark whinstone rubble with a large round tower and crenellated parapets, the building was designed with isolated wings so that prisoners had no contact with the outside world. It later served as a military prison before falling out of use, and it was restored and converted into a museum and offices between 1994 and 1996 by Stirling District Council. The building, together with its boundary walls, gatepiers and gates, is a Category A listed building, designated in November 1965.
