Balgonie Castle stands on the south bank of the River Leven near Milton of Balgonie in Fife. The courtyard castle originated in the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century, with a north-east range probably added in 1496 and further additions through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, culminating in work completed in 1706 that linked the earlier ranges together. It is a Category A listed building under Historic Environment Scotland's designation, first listed in 1972. Restoration of the castle began in 1971 and continued through the following decades. Balgonie combines a fourteenth-century tower house with later domestic ranges built up over more than three centuries of Fife's architectural history.
