Barnton Quarry, on Corstorphine Hill in Edinburgh, houses a former military command complex built in two phases within a disused stone quarry. The earlier structure, a Second World War Sector Operations Command centre for RAF Turnhouse, dates from the early 1940s. It was joined between 1951 and 1953 by a Cold War-era R4 ROTOR radar headquarters, the two buildings linked by a tunnel constructed from cast-iron segments of the type used on the London Underground. The complex is a Category A listed building under Historic Environment Scotland's designation, listed in 2021. Built for air defence and radar coordination, it stands as one of Edinburgh's more substantial surviving twentieth-century military structures.
