Sulgrave Manor near Banbury was built circa 1540-60 by Lawrence Washington, an ancestor of George Washington, who acquired the manor in 1539. The house remained the Washington family seat until it was sold in 1659, later becoming a farmhouse with parts demolished by the late 18th century. Between 1920 and 1930 the property was restored under the architect Sir Reginald Blomfield, rebuilding a section in period style. Sulgrave Manor is a Grade I listed building, first designated in 1969, reflecting its architectural and historical significance as a well-documented Tudor manor house with strong American connections.
