The Old Gaol in Buckingham was built in 1748, funded by Richard Grenville Temple, Viscount Cobham, following an Act of Parliament passed the previous year to secure the town's right to hold the county assizes. A semicircular gaoler's house designed by George Gilbert Scott was added to the front in 1839. The building went on to serve as a police station and, from 1891, a fire station, before falling into disuse and later being restored. It opened as a museum in 1993 and is Grade II* listed, its castellated, mock-castle exterior with corner turrets remaining largely intact.
