Wakefield Museum

Wakefield Museum traces its origins to the city's first civic museum and art gallery, which opened at Holmfield House in Thornes Park on 10 October 1923. The collection was later moved into the former Mechanics' Institute on Wood Street in 1956, before relocating again to its present home within the Wakefield One building on Burton Street in 2012. Free to enter, the museum is run by Wakefield Council and holds collections spanning archaeology, social history and natural history built up over a century of civic collecting. It forms part of the wider Wakefield Museums and Castles service alongside the city's other heritage sites.
