Beer Quarry Caves, a mile west of the village of Beer in Devon, is a man-made underground complex created by quarrying for Beer stone, a fine-grained limestone favoured for cathedral tracery and carved church features. Extraction began in the Roman period and continued, through Norman and medieval workings that extended the tunnels, until the 1920s. The site lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. Beer Quarry Caves represents around two thousand years of continuous stone extraction and is now open to visitors on guided tours through its underground galleries.
