Bradgate Park, near Leicester, developed from a medieval deer park enclosed by 1241 and is included on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. Within the park stand the ruins of Bradgate House, a brick mansion begun around 1490 by Thomas Grey, first Marquess of Dorset. Lady Jane Grey, later queen for nine days, was born there in 1537. The house survived until its abandonment in 1719 following the death of the first Earl of Stamford. The ruins, along with an associated moated lodge site, are protected as a Scheduled Monument, first designated in 1924.
