Leicester Castle developed around a Great Hall built in the 11th or 12th century, one of the oldest surviving aisled halls of its kind, which served as an Assize Court from 1273 to 1980. Its later brick front, dating from around 1695, fronts the former County Court, and the whole complex is Grade I listed. Immediately adjoining stands Trinity Hospital, an almshouse founded in 1331 by Henry, Earl of Lancaster, to house poor and infirm residents. Now known as Trinity House, the Grade II listed building retains a chapel with fabric surviving from the late 14th century, making the group a rare concentration of medieval civic and charitable architecture in the city.
