Leicester Guildhall began as the meeting hall of the Corpus Christi Guild, built around 1390 and later enlarged around 1450, with further east and west ranges added around 1490. A brick domestic wing was added to the south range around 1836, completing the timber-framed complex's courtyard plan. The building is Grade I listed, first designated in January 1950. Constructed principally in timber frame on stone plinths with Swithland slate roofs, the Guildhall today functions as a museum, gallery and entertainment venue, reflecting its long history of civic and communal use in the city.
