Newhailes House stands on the edge of Musselburgh in East Lothian. Its core dates from 1686, built to a design by the architect James Smith, with further interior work carried out by William Adam from around 1720. The house, together with its gatepiers, is a Category A listed building. The surrounding grounds are separately recognised, included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland since 2001. Newhailes was long associated with the Dalrymple family and is now maintained by the National Trust for Scotland, which opens the house and its parkland to visitors.
