Ghost Hunts at Smithills Hall

Smithills Hall, on the edge of Bolton, is a Grade I listed building designated in 1952 and is separately recorded as a scheduled monument. Its oldest surviving fabric, the great hall in the north range, is ascribed to the early 15th century, with the west range extended in 1590 and further alterations made in around 1875. The hall was a family residence for several centuries before being sold to Bolton Council in 1938, which retains ownership today. Its long architectural sequence spans stone-built medieval work through to Victorian-era remodelling, reflected in the layered form of the building that survives on the site.
